What Is Liraglutide?
Liraglutide is a once-daily prescription GLP-1 receptor agonist. It mimics aspects of the naturally occurring incretin hormone GLP-1, influencing glucose-dependent insulin secretion, glucagon signaling, appetite, and gastric emptying.
FDA-approved liraglutide products have product-specific indications, dosing, and prescribing information. Victoza and Saxenda contain liraglutide but are approved and labeled for different uses.
Treatment requires clinical screening, gradual dose escalation, and monitoring. A prescriber should review the boxed warning, contraindications, gastrointestinal effects, gallbladder and pancreatic concerns, kidney risks related to dehydration, and interactions with other glucose-lowering therapies.
What Has Liraglutide Been Studied For?
Clinical programs have evaluated liraglutide for glycemic control in type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular outcomes in selected adults with type 2 diabetes, and chronic weight management in eligible adults and adolescents under product-specific criteria.
